Ibiza has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 1999, and unusually the listing covers both culture and nature.

Dalt Vila

The sixteenth-century walls are among the best preserved Renaissance fortifications in the Mediterranean, built to hold off Ottoman raids and still entirely walkable.

The Phoenician settlement on the south coast and the vast necropolis in Ibiza Town document nearly three thousand years of continuous occupation.

The Posidonia meadows

The seagrass between Ibiza and Formentera is one of the oldest living organisms on earth and the reason the water is that colour. Anchoring over it is restricted; any good captain already knows.

Seeing it well

Walk the walls at dusk, visit the necropolis in the morning, and take a boat south to see the meadows from above. Charters are arranged through boats.
