Spotlight on Santa Gertrudis

Some call it the beating heart of Ibiza, as it is located in the geographical centre of this beautiful island. Santa Gertrudis, or Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera to give it is full name is unarguably one of the most diverse and attractive areas of the White Island.

The village is centred around a charming square which is dominated by the whitewashed church, which was thought to be built in 1797, although the rather daunting task of constructing this enchanting building began in 1785. The captivating stained glass features and ancient belfry make it a popular sightseeing destination.

However, the square itself is the real hub of the village and the community, which is made up of a truly cosmopolitan mix. Combining the artists and musicians who made their home here in the bohemian days of the 60´s and 70´s and never left, with today´s movers and shakers of the island, many of whom love the area for the excellent school and plentiful boutiques, you have a truly eclectic mixture of people who populate the area.

And whilst the village may be small, it offers a vast selection of places to wine and especially dine. The main square is home to some of the most celebrated, authentic eateries on the island, and here you can sample a taste of the ´real´ Ibiza. Bar Costa is perhaps the most famous and much loved of all, having made its name back in the heady days of the 60´s for making deals with penniless artists to trade their creations for food, and indeed, you can still see some of their artwork adorning the walls today! The bar is renowned for its jamon serrano, a true Ibicencan delicacy, and it serves arguably the very best on the island.  Bar Ullivan and Es Canto also play an important role in keeping the community spirit alive in this pedestrianised plaza, where children can play free as their parents enjoy a long, leisurely lunch or dinner.

For a more refined and romantic dining experience, we simply adore Macao Cafe. Don’t be fooled by the name, this is much more than a mere ´cafe´.  A true Ibiza institution, the charming, candlelit garden and welcoming interior will enchant and delight you. The menu is predominantly Italian, with a modern twist, and it’s not unusual to see supermodels sharing a table with stars of the music or showbiz scene on a summers evening. Run with passion and vigour by owner Luca, a warm welcome is guaranteed each and every time you visit.

The shopaholics amongst you will be in seventh heaven in Santa Gertrudis, a true haven of retail therapy. A host of small, eclectic boutiques dotted around the tree lined streets, selling a selection of Ibizan delights. Try Angels Ibiza for some boho chic clothing and accessories, or The Rose for a sublime selection of hand-sewn silk collections designed by co-owner Claudina Damonte. For a truly mindblowing shopping experience, head slightly out of town and discover Sluiz, a veritable treasure trove of fabulous homeware items, furniture and clothing. Slightly further along the road, you can also dive deep into the wonderful world of Galeria Elefante, a bohemian paradise which offers one of a kind artwork, jewellery and other wonderful items to intrigue and inspire you.

In short, Santa Gertrudis offers something for everyone, and at Black Book Ibiza, we can offer a wide selection of fabulous villas in and around this most sought after of areas. Contact us today info@blackbookibiza.com  to reserve your villa in Santa Gertrudis for summer 2018.
